  • An electrical emergency can fall into a number of categories depending on the nature of the problem, how the property is used, and what is important to the occupants.
  • A very common reason for calling out an electrician urgently is because you have no power to your sockets or lighting, often caused by either a tripped circuit breaker or RCD. Having no lighting within your property is a danger in itself, especially when there are stairs within the building. Having no power in our sockets affects our daily lives quite considerably, especially if we work from home. Central heating systems often take their power from socket circuits, so this would be affected along with internet connections, home security systems, etc.
  • There could be immediate danger present. For example, damaged equipment with live conductors (cables) exposed A fishy burning smell or smoke may be visible from the consumer unit or a socket front. You may be experiencing electric shocks from metal accessories and appliances. Businesses could lose money if they are unable to offer their normal services due to a power loss.
  • We would always recommend calling an electrician as soon as possible if something is immediately or potentially dangerous. Ultimately, it is up to the inhabitants or owners of the property to determine whether the electrical problem they have requires the urgent attendance of an electrician.

RCDs (residual current devices) are a valuable and very important safety device, often located within your consumer unit (fuse box). An RCD provides both fault protection and additional protection. They should be routinely tested every 6 months by pressing the small "Test" button located on the front of the device. The RCD should trip instantly into the OFF or Open position to indicate that it has tripped. After testing, simply push the lever back up into the ON (normal operating) position. This basic test only checks the mechanical functions of the device. A more thorough test of the RCD to ensure that the tripping times are within the appropriate standards can only be carried out by a qualified and competent electrician who will use specialist test equipment.

AFDD is an acronym for "Arc Fault Detection Device." AFDDs are relatively new to the UK and will become more common on electrical installations as a result of the wiring regulations' update to BS7671 Amendment 2. An arc fault detection device reduces the risk of a fire caused by faulty conductors and connections. When a dangerous arc fault is detected, the device will disconnect the circuit.
